I often find myself asking if I am doing enough. Am I doing the right things at the right time? Am I being a good role model, providing good training and spiritual support? Am I a good mother? Let’s talk about what the essential ingredients for raising happy children are.
My experience
After speaking to lots of moms (and I share this sentiment), I realize that mothers often don’t believe they have the qualities of a good mom. Some have said “I get angry and snap”, “I forget important dates”, “I don’t provide healthy meals”, “I forget to pack spare clothes”. “I don’t have a perfect answer for my kid’s countless questions”. And “I occasionally leave my children to go meet friends or treat myself to a massage”. Come on mamas! The bar is too high. At this rate, we are all domed to be terrible mothers.
I honestly think social media has also played a huge role in our perception of motherhood. Especially with the rise of Mom influencers (I am not one of them btw 🙂 ). There is definitely a pull to always put your best foot forward. To post the best pictures of your clean and aesthetic looking home. To create reels where your children look impeccable and act in a way that is socially acceptable. Moms, we do all this so that we can avoid viewers pointing fingers and labelling us as a bad mothers. Once our feed is beautiful we must be doing everything right. Being a good mother is equivalent to likes. Right? Wrong!
Sorry to burst your bubble but being a good mother involves so much more than what you present to the world. That is why a lot of mothers are burnt out and secretly depressed because no matter how hard they try to present a perfect façade, they know behind closed doors things are actually not great. The bottom line is, a mother’s role in raising children is paramount. Research and experience show that “A mother’s unconditional love and support are crucial in providing children with a sense of belonging, comfort and stability.” David Onu. When a mother is able to teach a child that they are valued members of the family and society, this child grows up with strong self-esteem. You want to be a good mother for the sake of your children. But what does it take to be a good mother?

Embrace Unconditional Love
At the core of being a good mother lies unconditional love. It’s the unwavering commitment to loving and accepting your children for who they are, flaws and all. This love provides the foundation for trust, security, and emotional well-being, fostering a nurturing environment where children can flourish.
Practice Patience and Understanding
Motherhood is a journey filled with ups and downs, triumphs and challenges. It requires patience, resilience, and an understanding heart. Being a good mother means being patient with your children, guiding them with empathy and grace as they navigate the complexities of growing up.
Prioritize Connection and Presence
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy for us moms to get caught up in the busyness of life. However, being a good mother means prioritizing connection and presence with your children. Take the time to engage in meaningful conversations, listen attentively to their thoughts and feelings, and create cherished memories together.
Lead by Example
Children learn by example, and as a mother, you are their greatest role model. Whether it’s demonstrating kindness, resilience, or perseverance, strive to embody the qualities you wish to instill in your children. Lead by example and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves.
Foster a Positive Environment
Creating a positive environment is essential for nurturing happy children. Surround them with love, encouragement, and positivity, and empower them to embrace life with optimism and confidence. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, and provide a safe space where they can explore, learn, and grow.
Practice Self-Care
Self-care is not selfish; it’s a vital component of being a good mother. Remember to prioritize your own well-being, both physically and mentally. Take time to recharge, pursue your passions, and nurture your own happiness. By taking care of yourself, you’ll be better equipped to care for your children with love and patience.
Celebrate Imperfection
Motherhood is a journey filled with imperfect moments, and that’s perfectly okay. Embrace the messiness of motherhood, celebrate the highs and lows, and remember that it’s the journey itself that shapes us as mothers. Let go of perfectionism and embrace the beauty of imperfection, knowing that your love is what truly matters.
In conclusion, being a good mother is not about being perfect; it’s about embodying love, patience, and understanding. It’s about nurturing happy children who feel loved, valued, and supported every step of the way. So, embrace the journey of motherhood with an open heart, knowing that your love is the greatest gift you can give to your children.
