Being a mom is a full-time job—whether you are chasing toddlers, managing school schedules, or overseeing endless to-do lists, the days can feel overwhelmingly packed. But even with a busy schedule, finding time to read doesn’t have to feel impossible. In fact, reading can become a revitalizing part of your routine, offering moments of calm and reflection in the midst of the day’s hustle and bustle. Let’s explore some practical strategies to help you fit reading into your life, along with the benefits and a few Bible-inspired insights to encourage your journey.

“Reading isn’t just a luxury; it’s a great way to recharge and reconnect with yourself”.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved writing. As a child, I would take a few sheets of paper and staple them together to create my own book. And I would just write stories with illustrations. However, reading was more of a challenge, especially academic reading. Erk! I hated it. In high school, we started reading a lot of literature in French and Spanish class and I began to understand how many lessons for living everyday life can be found in books. From then on, my interest in reading was sparked. I would read everything I could lay my hands on. Till children came along! I have an embarrassing collection of amazing books with bookmarks sitting pretty on my shelf.
Why Reading Matters (Especially for Moms)
Reading isn’t just a luxury; it’s a great way to recharge and reconnect with yourself. Here’s why it’s worth making time to read:
- Mental Escape: Books offer a much-needed mental break, transporting you to new worlds or allowing you to explore inspiring ideas without having to leave the couch.
- Personal Growth: Reading helps you expand your perspective and grow intellectually and emotionally, which can positively influence the way you approach motherhood.
- Stress Relief: Studies have shown that reading can lower stress levels and improve mental health. Even 15-20 minutes of reading a day can help calm a busy mind.
- A Healthy Habit for the Family: When your children see you reading, it sets a positive example for them. You’re showing them that learning is lifelong and that it’s okay to take time for personal growth.
But how do we as busy moms find time to read?

I am on a mission. A journey to improve my mental health and personal growth through reading more. No more excuses! Let’s go on this journey together. I’ll check back in a few months to update you on my progress.
Want to try to fit more reading into your busy schedule?
Here are the Strategies that I am following to add time for reading as a busy mom and how they’ve helped me read more.
Strategies to Fit Reading into a Busy Schedule
Finding time to read doesn’t have to mean carving out hours every day. Try these simple strategies to help you make reading a part of your routine:
1. Set Small Goals
Start with a realistic goal, like 10-15 minutes a day. You’ll be surprised at how much reading you can get done by making it a short, consistent habit.
2. Carry a Book Everywhere
Whether it’s a physical book, an e-reader, or an app on your phone, keep a book handy. That way, if you find yourself waiting in line or while the kids are occupied, you can squeeze in a few pages.
3. Try Audiobooks
Audiobooks are perfect for multitasking moms. Listen while cooking, folding laundry, or driving. Platforms like Audible or even your local library’s app can open up a world of listening options.
4. Incorporate Reading into Family Time
Share a book with your kids, or create a family reading time where everyone reads their own book for 10 minutes. Not only does this allow you to read, but it also fosters a love for reading in your children. It helps that Jordan and Leonard already love reading.
5. Get Up a Little Earlier or Wind Down with a Book
Setting your alarm 10-15 minutes earlier or winding down at night with a few pages can make a big difference. Not only does this add to your reading time, but it can also help you start or end your day more peacefully.
6. Join a Book Club (or Start a Mini One!)
Book clubs can give you a set reading pace and community to discuss what you’re reading. Can’t find a local club? Consider starting a small group with other moms or friends who want to read together and encourage each other. My friend just started one and it’s such a blessing. What God Says
Reading isn’t only a way to expand our minds but also a chance to reflect and grow spiritually. Here are some Bible-based insights to encourage your reading journey:
- Reflection in Stillness (Psalm 46:10): “Be still, and know that I am God.” This verse reminds us of the value of finding still moments in our day. Reading can be a form of stillness, allowing you to quiet your mind and draw closer to God.
- Growing in Wisdom (Proverbs 4:7): “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Reading offers us wisdom and understanding. By making time for it, even as a busy mom, you’re investing in wisdom that benefits not just you, but also your family.
- Restoring Your Mind and Spirit (Matthew 11:28): “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Finding rest through reading is a practical way to nurture your soul, giving you the energy and peace you need to continue serving your family with love.
As a busy mom, finding time to read may feel challenging, but it’s possible and incredibly rewarding. Whether you’re reading to relax, learn, or grow closer to God, every page you turn is a small investment in yourself that ripples out to your family. So grab a book, set small goals, and embrace those precious moments of peace and growth. Remember, in all the ways you care for your family, taking time for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s a step towards being the best mom you can be.
