Hearing from God is an essential part of a child’s spiritual growth. Teaching them how to recognize His voice—whether through dreams, visions, instincts, prayer, or Bible reading—can empower their faith and strengthen their relationship with Him. Here are practical ways to nurture this:
- Teach them to recognize God’s voice
I’ve always told my children that God speaks to them. And the question I get in return is usually “How come I can’t see Him or hear Him”? Children may wonder how to know it’s God speaking to them. Share these key points to help them discern:
- God’s voice brings peace and aligns with His Word.
- It encourages kindness, truth, and love.
- It doesn’t cause fear, confusion, or guilt.
Help them practice pausing in prayer to listen and trust the gentle nudges they feel. Since I started teaching my boys (6 and 3 year olds) this, they have shared so many visions and dreams with me. It is so encouraging to see their confidence grow as well as their understanding of the spiritual world blossom.
2. Encourage Dream Journaling
Dreams can be a way God speaks to children. Encourage them to write or draw their dreams upon waking. Explain that while not all dreams are from God, some can carry meaningful lessons or encouragement.
- Pray with them to ask God for clarity and wisdom about their dreams.
- Read Bible stories where God used dreams (e.g., Joseph in Genesis 37 or Daniel in Daniel 2).

3. Explore Biblical Stories of Visions
Teach your children about people in the Bible who experienced visions, like Samuel hearing God’s voice (1 Samuel 3) or Paul’s vision of Jesus (Acts 9).
- Explain that visions might be pictures, thoughts, or ideas God places in their minds.
- Provide a safe space for them to share if they feel God is showing them something. Be prepared to hear outrageous things but make sure you affirm their experiences without judgment.
4. Teach Them to Trust Their Instincts
Sometimes God speaks through a still, small voice or gut feeling. Teach your children to pay attention to the peace or uneasiness they feel in their hearts.
- Encourage them to ask, “Does this feel right according to what I know about God?”
- Share an example from your life where you followed God’s leading through an instinct.
5. Model Prayerful Listening
Demonstrate that prayer is more than talking—it’s also listening.
- Celebrate their openness by affirming anything they feel or hear, even if it’s simple (e.g., “I feel like God wants me to be kind today”).
- During family prayer, include a moment of silence to “listen” for what God might say.
- Teach them to ask God specific questions and wait for His guidance.

6. Guide Them in Reading the Bible
God often speaks through His Word, so help your children develop a love for Scripture.
- Encourage them to write or draw what they feel God is saying through a passage.
- Use age-appropriate Bibles to make reading engaging.
- Teach them how to pray before reading, asking God to reveal His message to them.

I recently got this for my 6 year old son. The language is clear and illustrations and images are not too overwhelming or babyish. Click here to purchase. Eden book store has many other Bibles to suite all ages.
7. Create Opportunities for Worship and Reflection
Worship is another powerful way to hear from God.
- Play worship music during quiet times and encourage your children to reflect on God’s goodness.
- Provide creative ways for them to connect, like journaling, painting, or singing.
8. Emphasize Patience and Trust
Teach your children that hearing from God doesn’t always happen instantly, and that’s okay. God often speaks in His timing.
- Encourage them to trust that God is always with them, even if they don’t hear Him right away.
- Remind them that their relationship with God grows stronger as they seek Him.
Encouraging children to hear from God is about fostering a relationship where they feel safe to explore their faith and experiences. By teaching them to listen through dreams, visions, instincts, prayer, and Bible reading, you’re equipping them with lifelong tools to grow spiritually.
